Car ramps make many automotive chores much easier. They let you get safely under the engine of your vehicle to complete jobs that would be extremely challenging or even impossible without them. There even professional grade hydraulic lifts that lets mechanics comfortably stand under a car and work on it. Though lifts are very expensive and not practical for a home garage, hobbyist can use ramps to make looking under a car much easier.
Car ramps work in a simple way. When put in front of the tires they support the weight of the car. Ramps are inclined at a 30 degree angle give or take. At the top, the ramp flattens out into a platform. Once on the ramp, the car is raised about two to three inches from the ground. The car ramps do not slip out because the car weight keeps them grounded to the floor. Though the car is not horizontal like with a hydraulic lift, enough space is created by the angle to lay under the car and work.
So many repairs are much easier using car ramps. Any part under the auto can be replaced with the help of car ramps. If you have ever tried to take out a fuel pump or starter through the hood you now how frustrating it can be from above. You can get it done but not without a few bruised knuckles and choice curse words. Water and oi pump replacements are much more doable with car ramp equipment. Anytime you have to get a hold of a part like a gasket or hose cradled below then engine, car ramps are your best bet.
Car ramps work well for many jobs but they are not for every task. While they make it much simpler to reach the drain plug and oil pan it is not the best idea to use them for oil changes. Draining the oil with the car on an angle can cause the old oil to run toward the lower side of the pan instead of flowing out. It is when you replace the oil pan , drain plug or gasket that you need the car ramps to get to the parts. Also, with wheel, brake or suspension jobs the front wheels resting on the ramp will not allow you to complete the work. Instead, use a car jack stand.
Anyone who likes to work on their car or save money doing some of their own repairs should have a pair of car ramps . Pick up your set at http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz.
